Back in Black

It seems that the use of black accents in interior design is taboo to some people. Black is enigmatic, mysterious, modern, chasmic, and bold. None of those words sound appealing if you’re trying to add more light or bring traditional elements into a space. Using black, however, can give your space much more character and depth if you’re willing to give it a chance.

Black doesn’t have to be the enemy of your more colorful accents; in fact, they can make quite the dynamic team. Adding black amidst color actually highlights the color itself. It’s like the black is gesturing towards the color and making jazz hands!

Black pieces bring a sort of absolutist, atmospheric energy into a room; the character of a room can feel in-flux and ill-defined if there’s not a grounding element brought in. Black acts as a statement color in a space as it contrasts and balances more colorful accents.

It’s no secret that black’s favorite partner is white. Together, they create a sleek, crisp, contemporary feel in a room. White walls and black finishes up a space’s sophistication level tenfold, deepening and intensifying whatever it contains.

If you’re one for grand entrances- be it for yourself or your home- adding black can make it all the grander. “Whether it's a console, storage baskets, lamps, pendants, the balustrade or bannister, or even the front door, accenting with black in the hallway makes for an impressive entrance that's just the right amount of inviting yet formal,” says Ruth Doherty of Homes & Gardens.
