De-Uglifying Patterns
One of the most increasingly elusive choices in interior decorating is the use of patterns in the home. Understandably so, it’s a lot easier to grasp decorating with solid colors. People are keen to avoid the general sense of tackiness that misusing patterns often give. Decorating with patterns seems daunting, but it’s simpler than you think.
According to The Spruce, the defining strategy in using patterns is complementing them appropriately in a space. Distributing them evenly around the room is the first hurdle- without this balance, the space can feel lopsided and off-putting. Don’t go absolutely nuts with patterns either; placing them sparingly and with deliberation will prevent visual chaos ensuing in your space.
Naturally, it’s key to determine what kind of vibe you want your space to exude. For example, floral patterns give spaces a pretty, soft feel, while animal print give more of a quirky, eccentric feel. Floral patterns should be grouped with stripes and polka dots, and animal print should be grouped with herringbone, stripes, and paisley to accommodate the theme of the space.
Color coordinating your pattern selections is the final key element. Choosing colors in the same section of the color wheel is the most aesthetically pleasing option. Ranging the color tones from light to dark also helps give the room depth and gives the eyes somewhere to wander.
