Blend Your Family

Updating furniture in your home doesn’t have to mean overhauling every square inch. In fact, it’s becoming increasingly more common- and even stylish- to mix vintage pieces with more contemporary items. And not stylish in a “dropping a lot of dough” way either, blending old with new is easy on your wallet and the environment.

A core element of interior design is the concept of layering. You may look at your mainstay furniture items and think it’ll be hard to depart from their theme, but juxtaposing them with a vintage rug, wall accents, and table pieces is a great option. Color coordination is key when bringing in wood pieces; they can be completely different shapes and styles, but as long as they generally share the same hue, your space will be replete with character.

For the sake of durability, investing in updated sofas or accent chairs is in your best interest. However, that doesn’t mean you have to go buy some $10,000 sectional with three charging ports, a back massager, and a built-in Alexa. Updated items can maintain the vintage look while not collapsing after a few uses. Oftentimes, the most recycled furniture items you find at vintage stores holds up the best.

Antique wall accents give spaces great warmth and character. They can make a room feel less sterile while also genuinely complementing the color of the room. Not to mention, more storied pieces add a level of interest that modern stuff often can’t provide.

Accessorize your spaces with things like worn-wood shelves, antique glassware, woven baskets, and more to introduce a welcoming aesthetic. These small touches do wonders for style layering and can easily round out the room.
