Book Review: Psycho-Cybernetics

Keeping up with my book reviews this year, I am mostly finished with Maxwell Maltz’s Psycho Cybernetics, which is coined as one of the foundational self-help books of the 20th century. Originally written in 1960, many self-help gurus like Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, and Zig Ziglar have based their techniques on this work. To say the least, the book has some pretty good substance. Additionally, many psychological methods of training elite athletes are based on the book’s concepts.

Focusing largely on one’s self-image, Maltz explains in-depth that in order to achieve success in any facet of life, you have to have a strong self-image of yourself. He goes on to explain methods for achieving this including my favorite, developing your own little quiet place in your mind. When stressed, the nervous system tends to overload your brain not allowing you to focus on what is important. During these times, one can benefit by imagining a quiet room they are sitting in with an ocean view. This has helped tremendously during times of stress for me and always brings me back to center.

Also, when developing one’s self-image it gives you permission to demand from life what it is you are really seeking. Whether it is a promotion, higher prices for your business, or finding a soulmate that you deserve, the overwhelmingly majority of these things can be boiled down to your own self-image. Many people may think this kind of stuff is unimportant or voodoo, but it works wonders when you implement it into your life. I highly suggest giving this book a read.
