What’s Your Origin Story?

Ever heard the phrase, “What’s your story?”. This may seem simple on the surface, but it is much more profound than many of us believe so. Each of us has our story, whether it is struggles, triumphs, or any combination of the two. None of us have the same story, which is why it is always compelling to hear someone’s background and how they got where they are.

Obviously it is more interesting to hear someone’s story who has excelled in life. Someone who has broken through major obstacles and struggles and come out on the other end a better person. But many times the simplest story of someone’s past can compel almost anyone to stop and listen. This is especially true when marketing yourself, your business, or trying to win friends and influence people. Really tapping into something that others can relate to is truly a remarkable skill, and is often overlooked.

Enter Batman: his story begins with being a child and his parents being murdered in front of him by a robber. His chief aim in life being to stop crime in the sake of justice. Otherwise, he would be some lunatic that dressed up in a cape and caused chaos, oftentimes killing innocent civilians as collateral damage. He would be a villain, with viewers wanting him to put in prison without his origin story.

If you’re a candidate for a job, your origin story tells the prospective employer a lot about your experiences and what you will bring to the job. Your origin story to a prospective partner tells them about your past (good or bad), and how they can specifically relate or if you’d make a good partner. Your origin story as a business owner or salesman helps ideal prospects relate to and make them more likely to hire you or buy. Whenever you've hit a wall with where you’re at, why not find a compelling reason to get others to relate to you psychologically by effectively crafting your origin story? It could certainly bring you what you’re looking for.
